The Gentle Art of Japanese Koi Care

Koi are undeniably beautiful fish. Most people only get to see them when they go to the Asian restaurants. They are said to be a good luck symbol for the establishment. I have four Japanese koi in my back yard here in California and though I started with goldfish ( I still have two large eight year old goldfish in my office aquarium.)

I was very surprised at the difference between cost and maintenance of goldfish in an internal environment and taking care of koi in a more natural setting outdoors. The choice of fish and design of my pond was haphazard in the beginning. I soon learned that you have to choose both fish and environment carefully.

Your pond area must be kept clean and have enough room for the growth of koi. There will need to be adequate light and shade for the koi fish to remain stigmatized. Enough cannot be said about setting up the pond for regular maintenance and temperature regulation. The reason why you'll want to properly prepare your koi pond is because you will be caring for fish that can grow to a length of three feet and live as long as sixty years.

The expense of caring for Japanese koi can be a surprise to the unwary pet owner. Be prepared to have filters, food and medicine for your koi and prepare your environment for seasonal adjustment. Remember that these beautiful fish will give you lasting enjoyment and a serene sense of joy for quite a long time. But to keep them healthy and vibrant, throughout the year, you will have to take good care of them and pay close attention to their diet.

The cost of raising koi can be extremely expensive if you don't know what you're doing. You can purchase koi from most large pet stores as well from private sources. You can pay as little as a few dollars to as much as tens of thousands of dollars for koi. If you are simply raising them for fun and peaceful past time, stay budget conscious. Take your time and grow your pond; you'll have years of fun and fulfillment.
