Contemplating the Joy of Koi

There are some things in this world that are just amazing to watch. Flying kites on a deserted beach in the end of summer is one of those magnificent events. Another is sitting by a pond and watching koi fish swim up to you as you reach down to tease them with your fingers.

The koi fish is one of the most beautiful fish in the world. It can be tamed to allow you to hand-feed it and also to stroke it. Koi will let you feed them and even pet them. The great thing about Japanese koi fish is the brilliance of their colors.

Koi fish has its natural habitat in the pond though many koi owners keep their fish in aquariums. Although koi are hardy fish, it is best to prepare and maintain the environment properly if they are to be kept in tanks. Ask you pet representative for the proper filtration materials for your tank.

Feed your koi commercially available koi food. The price of koi food is reasonable and takes the guesswork out of feeding them. If you want to give them treats, make sure to give them supplementary foods like small prawns and worms. Koi are omnivorous so they will take what you give them just be careful and conservative in your selection.

You can use those treats to train koi to come to you. Take care not to over-feed your koi, because they will get sick, pollute their tank with waste and excrete ammonia which will cause them to become ill. You must maintain the water composition in the tank to avoid excess ammonia and oxygen levels.

When the tank is not maintained properly the environment becomes polluted; the water does not have enough oxygen for your Koi to breathe properly. The water also supports bacteria and other disease causing organisms.

Keep your koi happy and healthy for endless hours of peaceful enjoyment.
