Top Aquarium Filtration Systems For Your Fish

Aquarium filtration systems are one of the most important parts of your new pet fish's home. These aquarium filters maintain and clean the water from harmful chemicals and contaminants and periodically must be changed. There are three basic types of filters which include mechanical, chemical and biological filtrations systems.

The first type of filtering is known as mechanical filtration. This type of system works by actually trapping particles of dirt and grime that are suspended in the water and trapping them in fibrous types of pads which are found inside the filter itself. Obviously when the filter is full of all those poisonous materials that will harm your fish on the long haul, it must be changed. Several different types of filter pads are used, including pressed fibers, fluffs, woven and pads. Most of these are made from polyester. Foam sponge is also a main component to this type of filter.

The second type of filter system is the chemical filtration system. The most common type of this is the charcoal filter that is very common. The activated charcoal is a very good choice and is good for removing a great deal of pollutants. This system works by having the charcoal absorb all of the bad things and chemicals floating inside the aquarium tank. Another type is the use of the carbon filter. This is perhaps the most common type found in home aquariums. These filters can remove a large amount of contamination and are commonly used along with mechanical filters. Just remember that the filter can only do so much, especially if it is dirty, so you must always keep a good eye on it at all times and change filter components when necessary

The third type is called the biological filtration system, also known as biofiltration, is probably the most important system you will use for your fish tank. This type of filter will filter out all of the particles too small for the other types of systems to remove. You can't even see most of these types of particles. It works by allowing "good" bacteria to grow on filters inside the tank allowing the water to maintain the right chemical balance. This is vital to your fish's health and wellbeing. These bacteria will actually digest and process the waste products of the fish and protect them from dangerous levels of waste in the water.

Aquarium filters are available in many different sizes suitable for any type of tank. You can purchase a box corner filter made from plastic which houses all the filtering components and is commonly found in most home aquariums. Under gravel filters are placed under the gravel of the tank, hence the name, and are connected to air pumps. Canister filters hang onto the side of an aquarium, and will contain an internal pump which is connected to a sealed container. This container traps waste and particles from the aquarium water. Fluidized bed filters hang on to the wall of the aquarium. With this type of filter they pump water up and into the water through fluidized materials.

When choosing an aquarium filtration system you must keep in mind the type and size of the fish that will be in your tank. For small fish or baby fish, a sponge type filter is a must. You would not want your new fish to get sucked up into it.

Aquarium filtration systems are a very important part of your fish environment and before choosing which type you should buy, it is always a good idea to talk with your local pet shop pro for advice. Remember also that the filter will only work if it is clean. That is your job and the life and health of your fish depend on it.
