How to Start a Fish Tank Today

If you are here, you want to know how to start a fish tank today! Well, I can give you some quick tips on how to start a fish tank, but tip #1 is that it takes more than one day to set up a fish tank. If you want your new fish to survive you need to let the tank cycle. So keep reading to learn more about how to start a fish tank.

#1 Choose your aquarium. Many times when you read top ten lists it will tell you to "buy your aquarium" but the fact remains that there are many second hand fish tanks that will do perfectly. Do not spend money unless you want something new. I personally love aquarium shopping. Once you have the tank set up, and have filtration, etc, let the water cycle for a few days. Depending on the fish type, you may need to cycle it for awhile. I have had a cichlid tank cycling for a month before I put my cichlids in.

#2 Do NOT take the advice of the pimple faced kid that is fetching your fish for you. Do your own research because anyone can work at a pet store. That sounds terrible, but you do not want to waste your time or your money buying fish that are not going to survive. A few hours doing research is a few hours spent well.

#3 Research information such as pH balance and nitrites. If you are investing in expensive fish, there are all very relevant and necessary words. Also, there are very lazy ways of setting up a tank so you do not need to clean it often. A pet store owner once showed me this method and I have thanked him ever since. I love fish tanks, but I love not having to clean them!

#4 Look online to see if there are online fish forums near you. Try to find people who buy fish in your city on a regular basis. They will know where the quality fish can be found. I am a cichlid person, so again I would like to point out that if you are purchasing these, please do ask around. They will live for years if giving the proper habitat and if healthy. People that keep cichlids usually know the best place to shop at. In my experience, it is usually the mom and pop operations that give the best product and care and truly know how to start a fish tank. They have a store because they live for pets, not because they are making minimum wage.

Final Thoughts Learning how to start a fish tank can be a daunting task, but with preparation, you will have the most beautiful focal point to any room. Use these top tips to start your journey and really truly figure out how important it is to know how to start a fish tank properly.
