How to Build a Koi Pond - Koi Health

Are you interested to know how to build a koi pond? It has become very popular now! The most important thing to know about koi ponds is that you have to pre-plan. You have to know about koi fish before you build a koi pond. Koi fish are not very hardy, but with the right water quality and by keeping their stress level low, they should be able to thrive. Below you will find some information regarding koi fish health.

The health of Koi fish reflect the care given to them and the quality of their watery environment. Koi water quality is the most important item regarding koi health. Water to koi is like air to humans. Just like even a little bit of gas or pollution is not good for us, even a little low oxygen levels in the water can be very bad for koi fish. Too high ammonia levels can kill fish within several days. So, if you're interested in how to build a koi pond, you need to be concerned with the basic five water quality levels: ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and oxygen.

Parasites are another threat to the health of your koi fish. Koi contract parasites from other koi, so it's essential to quarantine new fish before adding them to your pond. Quarantine the new fish for three weeks, while treating them for parasites. If you do not have a separate quarantine tank, then be sure you buy your koi from a reputable dealer that will only sell parasite-free koi fish.

Bacterial infections can be harmful for your koi fish. Bacteria occur naturally and can be found in all ponds. There are (hopefully!) no bacteria in tap water because it is treated with chlorine; but if you put tap water in a pond, bacteria will form when the chlorine will evaporate, usually with three weeks. An infection can occur, when the slime coat of the koi is broken, and bacteria are able to infiltrate. These sores can grow rather quickly, so it's important to treat the koi as soon as the infection is detected.

If there's too many koi fish in a small pond, their stress levels can go up dramatically. Overcrowding koi fish is detrimental to their health and can lower their immune system, causing them to contract infections.

While you're thinking on how to build a koi pond, remember to pre-plan and ensure that the koi pond you want to build is big enough!
