The Most Popular Types of Goldfish

Most people know what goldfish are, but did you know there are many types of goldfish? Here is some information on the most popular kinds, along with some tidbits.

Comet goldfish not only bred in outdoor ponds; they frequently reproduce in large aquariums as well. They naturally inclined spawn in spring when water gradually becomes warmer and warmer after winter. Comet goldfish, the most common variety, will reach 8-15" at maturity. These fish will reach nearly their full size, then begin growing more slowly. Comet goldfish typically can get up to about 12" in body length, and those with the longest finnage may reach 18" overall. They are not overly interested in eating or otherwise destroying decorative pond plants.

Common Goldfish were first introduced to Japan in the 1500s, to Europe in the 1700s, and to the United States in the mid 1800s. Common and comet goldfish can survive, and even thrive, in any climate in which a pond for them can be created. Introduction of wild goldfish can cause problems for native species. Commons , comets , and other faster varieties can easily eat all the food during a feeding before fancy varieties can reach it. This can be a problem that leads to stunted growth or possible starvation of fancier varieties when they are kept in a pond with their single-tailed brethren.

Black Oranda Goldfish can have caudal fins that are about one and a half times the length of their bodies. The pelvic and pectoral fins are usually rounded and of medium length. Black Moor goldfish are classifed as "fancy" goldfish. A beautiful, velvety black, their scales have a bronze/gold sheen when observed at a certain angle.
