Goldfish Diseases 101 and How to Treat Them

Goldfish diseases do not have to be fatal. The best thing you can do is learn as much as you can to better help your pet get better.

Fin Rot: Fin rot is one of the most common results of an unclean tank. If you are one of those people who doesn't clean your tank weekly than go take a look at the tails on your goldfish. Fin rot like many diseases that are prone to goldfish has the inept ability to strike at any given moment. There are things however you can do as an owner to reduce the chances of this disease from affecting your goldfish.

Feeding your fish to avoid disease: Feed your fish once every day, what they can eat in 5 mins or the food will spoil the tank. Feeding them high animal content, high protein foods is a mistake that can lead to fatty degeneration disorders internally, "gas bladder" orientation syndromes (fish unable to keep themselves spatially stable), and outright death. Goldfish need foods formulated for their toothless jaws, long, spiraled digestive tracts. Feeding your goldfish peas that are cut in half is a tried and true remedy for goldfish.

Fin rot usually happens to a fish that is already suffering from something else like an injury caused by tank bites that bite. They are already weak and fall prey to this infection. Fin rot occurs when a bacterial infection occurs in the injured part of the fin; the bacterium slowly eats away at the tissues of the fin from the edges in, until it reaches the body. From there, this bacterial infection can spread and start eating away at the body of your goldfish. Fin rot can happen to any fish and goldfish are no exception. As the name implies, this appears as a white rotted edge on the fins.
