Having a goldfish tank in your home is one of the most relaxing things you can do. Goldfish make great hobbies. The fish for this type of tank can range from small goldfish to large goldfish, orange goldfish, white goldfish, black goldfish, and many goldfish that are a wide variety of any of these color combinations. If you have small children, you can have great fun making up silly goldfish names.
However, if you wish to successfully maintain a goldfish tank, no matter if it is for small or large goldfish, you must have some basic knowledge before you even start.
1. Buy the right size aquarium. You cannot imagine how important this is. Goldfish live a long time and what will start out as a small goldfish will one day grow into a large goldfish if it is given the right amount of room to grow.
2. You will need to clean your tank once a week at a minimum. This means that you will need to vacuum any fish waste or other debris such as uneaten food from the bottom of the tank. You will also need to remove half of the water in the tank and replace it with water that has sat overnight in the same room as the fish tank. This will allow chemicals such as chlorine to evaporate from the water prior to putting it in the tank. It will also ensure that the water is the same temperature and avoid shocking the fish.
3. There are many different types of goldfish. You should do some research on each type prior to making a purchase to see which one appeals the most to you and which one you feel the most confident about handling and raising. You need to learn the proper care for the particular breed of goldfish that you choose to purchase.
4. What to feed your fish should be the first question you ask at the pet store. You also need to know how often to feed them and how much they will need to eat for proper nutrition.
You might choose a large goldfish, or you might choose a small one; but, either way, you need to be prepared to care for them properly before you actually make a purchase.
