The Right Environment For Your Small Goldfish

Goldfish come in two different types. The ones best suited for an aquarium are the small goldfish. The ones best suited for outdoor ponds are the larger goldfish.

Goldfish are schooling fish. This means that they will survive better in groups of two or more. When you buy a tank for your small goldfish, you must purchase one that is big enough for a group of small goldfish. Many people disagree about what size of tank is big enough for small goldfish.

What you must remember is that goldfish are some of the dirtiest aquarium fish you can buy. They do not store their food as other animals do. Whatever they eat is immediately excreted in the form of waste. Even if you only have one small goldfish, a 10 gallon tank can get very dirty very fast. If you were to add several more to the tank, you would find that the tank would get very dirty very fast.

Experts will tell you that one small goldfish should have a tank that is at least 15 gallons in size. Two small goldfish will need a 40 gallon or larger tank. This will give you a window of about a week between water changes.

The best way to keep your small goldfish healthy is to provide them with a clean environment. To do this, you will need to change the water at least once a week. If you really want your tank to stay clean, change the water twice a week. You should not be changing all of the water in the tank at one time.

Only change approximately 30-50 percent of the water at once. Doing so will help you to be sure that the chemical consistency in the tank and the temperature in the tank does not change so drastically that it affects the fish. Too much of a temperature change or too much of a chemical change can mean that you may one day find dead goldfish floating in your tank because they could not take the shock of the fast change.

Small goldfish also need room to grow and getting them a larger tank will make sure that this is available. If you provide the room, your small goldfish may reach a size of 8-10 inches. You must never crowd your goldfish in the tank.
