Helping Your Child Choose Goldfish Names

Your child has been begging for a goldfish and you finally bought it. Now that it is at home and in the tank, your child wants to know, "What should we name it?" At first you are stumped. Then you stop and think to yourself, "What are some good goldfish names?".

Do you pick the obvious name of "Goldie"? Or, do you try to be original and come up with a name that is so unique that no one else would ever think of it?

Since your new goldfish is a part of your family now, here are some basics in helping you to choose just the right name.

If you stop and look at your new fish, you will undoubtedly find a character trait that jumps out at you. It if has an orange spot, maybe the obvious name for your new goldfish could be something like "Spot". There could be bulging eyes that might suggest the name, "Buggy". Your goldfish might have a unique look. If you point that out to your child, he may be able to come up with a name very quickly. If have small goldfish, maybe the name could be suggestive of it's size.

Before choosing an off the wall name or silly name, keep in mind that goldfish can live for 10 to 20 years. Knowing this, if you give the fish a ridiculous name, you might have to explain that ridiculous name in 10 or 20 years to other people.

Most importantly, it is important to have fun in choosing goldfish names. Since the fish doesn't have to learn it's new name, take several days and come up with silly names before you actually settle on one. To use an example, my daughter has an aquarium shark. Naming the shark was the subject of discussion for several days before actually naming it. There were more than 20 names that were suggested. At the end, we decided on the first name we came up with, which was "Meatloaf".

Children are creative and this is a good way for them to express their creativity. Selecting goldfish names can be creative and fun.
