When shopping for an aquarium, saltwater or freshwater, there are many factors to consider. From the size of the space you have chosen, to the amount of maintenance involved, a little research can save you time and money.
There are many types of fish tanks to choose from, and picking the right one can be overwhelming unless you know what you want before you go shopping. Creating a list will give you a way to compare prices. Here are a few basic items you will need.
Aquariums
Glass aquariums are usually cheaper and don't scratch as easily as acrylic aquariums. They tend to look bulkier and are heavier because of the frame needed in their construction.
Acrylic tanks are sealed differently then glass and usually look nicer and the seal is stronger. They weigh less, if this is a consideration, but require a lighter touch when you clean them, to avoid scratches.
Both types of aquariums come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but if you want an unusual shape, acrylic fish tanks come in wider choices.
Sizes range anywhere from 10 gallons to 55 gallons and larger. Make sure you will be able to keep up with the scheduled maintenance before purchasing one of the larger fish tanks.
In either case, make sure your aquarium has a sturdy base or stand. With the water in the tank, it is very heavy and should not be able tip easily.
Saltwater or Freshwater
Each type of aquarium has features that recommend choosing them.
If you don't have much space, a freshwater aquarium will probably be best. Freshwater aquarium fish are usually smaller and require less space, and the tank is easier to maintain. The fish can be less expensive, but you can find some beautiful species.
One thing to keep in mind when deciding on a saltwater aquarium, they tend to be much harder to keep in balance for beginners. Some saltwater aquarium fish can grow quite large, so find out what size tank is needed for the type of fish you want to populate your marine tank. The brilliant colors of some saltwater aquarium fish are hard to resist.
