Keeping Goldfish Healthy and Happy

Keeping goldfish happy really isn't that hard, provided you know a bit about them.

Goldfish may display similar behaviors when responding to their reflections in a mirror. When they have constant visual contact with humans they also seem to stop associating them as a threat. Goldfish are hardy outdoors as long as the bottom of the pond remains unfrozen--so the pond has to go below the frost line. Goldfish don't get pregnant. If the conditions are right, the female lays the eggs and then male then fertilises them with their sperm around the fishtank.

Goldfish have what could be called a selective memory, that is to say they have some kind of conscience of what has happened on previous occasions, but are not sure what it was. They can be trained to do simple tasks such as eat from a certain ring inside their bowl, This is because they instinctively know that something good is in that area, they are just not sure what. They need to be raised in a large volume of water. Unfortunately, most hobbyists start out with impractical small tanks, often 2 1/2, 5 or 10 gallons. Goldfish, and some other kinds of fish, are able to gulp air at the surface to increase their oxygen consumption.

Goldfish are still a very popular fish in aquariums as well as in ponds and can today be obtained in a wide range of different variations. Goldfish can tolerate the temperature itself quite well, but may suffer due to lack of oxygen. Goldfish diseases are rarely contracted by humans, or visa versa.
