Everything You Need to Know About Aquarium Fish Diseases

Aquarium fish disease is common for all fishes. Hundreds of health problems can affect the fish. A basic understanding of the nature of fish diseases is important for fish culturists.

Healthy fish feeding off of diseased ones is a primary means of transmitting the infection. Carbon dioxide poisoning and freezing are two commonly used, allegedly humane methods to put a fish down, but neither will kill this bacteria.

Treatment involves isolation of the sick fish and medication. Treatment would depend on the cause. It may be as simple as changing the water (if it's a result of tank parameters being out of whack) or treatment with an anti-parasitic solution if it's gill parasites. Treatment chemicals are costly and can, in the wrong dosage, be toxic to fish. It is therefore essential to know and understand how the strength of these chemicals is expressed and how dosages can be calculated.

Fin rot's most common cause is poor water quality and husbandry; fish that have experienced shipping stress are also very susceptible. Overcrowding , overfeeding and high ammonia and nitrite concentrations will often cause fin rot.

Stress affects the immune response in fish in much the same way it does in higher animals. The cause of stress, whatever it may be, is referred to as the stressor. Stress upsets the normal electrolyte (sodium, potassium, and chloride) balance which results in excessive uptake of water by fresh water fish and dehydration in salt water fish.

Careful inspection and observation before you buy fish can help you choose healthy specimens. Examine all fish in the aquarium for signs of disease. Care should be taken in choosing the appropriate one. Many antibiotics, if used incorrectly or without proper care can be more dangerous to your tank then the initial infection.
