Aquarium Tanks - Fish and Maintenance

Aquarium tanks are your fish's home and lots of thought should be placed on how they are maintained. Here are some tips to think about and some of the basics that you will need to keep those fish happy, healthy and most importantly alive for a long time.

The first and most important tip of all is realize that aquarium maintenance is not something to be taken lightly. An aquarium is an eco system and since this aquatic eco system is closed there is only so much Mother Nature can do to maintain it. You must take all of the responsibility for this and that takes time. Make sure that before you decide to set up a tank in your home, you are prepared for all of the responsibility.

Now the first part of maintaining the aquarium is to be careful to not over feed your fish in the first place. Find out how much food your particular fish eat naturally, and stick to it. You are trying to recreate the natural environment, so over feeding can result in a less than perfect environmental setting. It will make the water dirty, and it is something which you can control.

Did you know that nitrates build up in the water pretty quickly and can turn your clean aquarium into a dirty and dangerous one rather quickly. For this reason it is best to change at least half of the water every month. Another benefit to doing this is that it will help prevent diseases which can infiltrate your tank. As uneaten food decomposes, it poisons the water. Filters can help, but being careful about food amounts is a better preventative measure. Be careful when changing the water though. If you are thinking that maybe you should change all of the water, do not do that. This will completely change the environment and that is not very safe.

Maintaining your aquarium can also be helped by having several tools handy to help with the job. These include a scraper, net, siphons, bucket, water treatments, as well as other basics such as filters, ornaments, gravel, plants and air pumps. All of these things play an important part on aquarium tank maintenance and all work together.

A word on filters though. Make sure they are clean and in working order. They are one of your first line of defense strategies for keeping the tank clean and safe. If you are wondering about which type of filter to use, check with your local pet shop for information specific to your particular situation.

Aquarium tanks are the home of your new aquatic pets, and they completely depend on you for their health and well being. Don't take this lightly, and always check with your local experts to make sure that everything is safe.
