Did You Know? Male Bettas Build Bubble Nests
Yes, that's right. The male Betta builds bubble nests to prepare for the arrival of eggs. If the water is clean, usually you will find the male working on a bubble nest in a corner of the tank. You will see him gulp some air and then spit out a bubble covered in his spit so it doesn't pop.
Did You Know? Bettas Breathe Air
Bettas have what is called a labyrinth organ which allows it to breathe air. In fact, Bettas need to breathe air otherwise they will drown! Isn't that something! Here is one truly unique fish that can literally drown in water if he doesn't have access to the surface.
Did You Know? Bettas Have Been Known To Live Up To 9 Years
Bettas that are given excellent water conditions and are exercised on a regular basis have been known to live up to 9 years. These little fish are quite the trooper. In the average household though, the average lifespan of these fish is generally 2 to 3 years with some living longer when given excellent conditions. Remember, the Bettas from the pet store are already 6 months to a year old.
Did You Know? Male Bettas Raise Their Kids
Another unique trait of this fish is that the male raises the kids. The male is the one that builds the nest. He is the one to make sure all the eggs are put up into the nest. He is the one that protects the nest with the eggs inside. The female Betta however, is liable to eat her own eggs.
