Sand And Catfish Shark - How To Customize Your Fish Tank For Bigger Fish

Among the variety of shark in the ocean the Sand shark is considered to be the most timid of the lot. It is also not as aggressive as its cousins. This variety of shark moves very slowly and is a lot smaller than the other sharks in the ocean. Though the sand shark grows to a length of 5 feet it can easily be kept in an aquarium for about 3 years. Then you will have to transfer the shark to a larger aquarium, if you can afford one, or donate it to one of the state owned aquariums where it can be taken care of.

Sand sharks, like any shark, is a cruising fish. It must keep moving in the ocean or tank. There is a common belief about the shark, once a shark is born it must keep swimming, because if a shark stops swimming it will die. This may be because a shark, like other fish, does not have the mechanism of gulping water and forcing it out over the gills where the oxygen is absorbed. By constantly swimming the shark forces water into its mouth and out of its gills. This is the way a shark breathes.

This is also the reason why you should have plenty of space in your aquarium for a shark to swim around. These shark survive very well with catfish shark in a tank though a catfish shark require a water mixture of salt water and fresh water. Catfish shark are inhabitants of areas of the ocean where rivers meet the sea. this mixture of salt and fresh water is called 'brackish' water. Though Catfish are not really sharks they are called so because of their dorsal fin and their habit of constantly cruising around the tank like other sharks. Catfish shark do not grow more than a foot in length, but may develop a habit of gulping down any other inmate of the tank that can fit in its mouth.

Coming back to the Sand shark, you will be doing a great injustice to nature if you do not know how to take care of it in your tank. These variety of shark are on the list of 'endangered species' and so if you do not know how to care for them you may only contribute to diminishing their numbers. On the other hand if you can care for them you will only contribute to adding them to state owned aquariums when they out grow the size of your aquarium.

You will need the same kind of necessary equipment for your sand shark aquarium such as heaters, aerators, filters and feeders as you will need for your other aquariums. Remember that sharks are used to pretty dark environments and so you should place your tank in a place that has soft lighting. This is also the reason that regular tank lighting will not do if you want to keep shark in your tank. IF you have other fish in the tank then ensure there are plenty of water plants to provide shade to the lower parts of the tank.
