Betta Fish Facts

Here are some Betta fish facts for you to know. Siamese Fighting Fish, also know as Japanese Fighting fish or more commonly known to us as Betta fish are some of the most popular fish to own. These fish are extremely beautiful because of the many colors of their fins as well as the extravagance of their tails.

Here are some additional basic Betta fish facts for you to know in case you are planning to buy a Betta fish or if you already own one.

Bettas are a freshwater fish found in the Mekong River basin in Southeast Asia. Most are not very colorful but have become so through selective breeding over the decades. There are nearly fifty different types of Bettas known to us.

They can live from 2 to 5 years. They can grow to be as big as 7 inches but most average 2.3 to 3.5 inches in length. A very uncommonly known Betta fish fact is that they have the ability to breath both through their gills as well as straight from the atmosphere via a tiny organ I their head called a labyrinth organ.

Bettas have upturned mouths which in the wild allowed them to eat mosquitos and the like from the surface of the water. The more variety of food in a Betta fish's diet, the healthier they tend to be. Some great food for a them includes both fish pellets as well as live food such as blood worms or brine shrimp.

Another misconceived Betta fish fact: in the wild, these fish will fight each other when one comes near another's territory but this isn't always to the death if the Bettas have the opportunity to flee. This is not the case for ones that are in the same tank though, since they don't have any where to flee. They will fight to the death so it is unwise to keep them together.

I hope these basic Betta fish facts have helped you to understand a little more about them.
